INSS (National Social Security Institute - Instituto Nacional do Seguro Social) is the most significant deduction from Brazilian workers’ salaries, representing between 7.5% and 14% of monthly earnings. Understanding exactly how this calculation works is essential for planning your net income and verifying that deductions are correct.

This guide explains the updated INSS 2024 table, shows how to calculate step by step, and presents the specifics for each contributor category.

What is INSS and how it works

Purpose of the contribution

INSS is the mandatory social security contribution that guarantees rights such as retirement, disability benefits, death pension, and maternity pay. It’s a pay-as-you-go system, where current contributions finance benefits paid today.

This contribution applies to the worker’s gross salary, before other deductions like Income Tax.

Who must contribute

The contribution is mandatory for:

  • CLT (Labor Law - Consolidação das Leis do Trabalho) employees (automatic payroll deduction)
  • Public servants subject to RGPS
  • Casual workers (port workers, stevedores)
  • Individual contributors (self-employed, entrepreneurs)
  • MEI (Individual Microentrepreneur - Microempreendedor Individual) (fixed monthly amount)
  • Special insured (small rural producers)

Retirees who return to work also contribute, but with specific rules.

Salary brackets and rates

The INSS 2024 table maintains the progressive calculation implemented in 2020, where different rates apply to specific salary brackets:

BracketContribution SalaryRateAmount to Deduct
1stUp to R$ 1,412.007.5%-
2ndR$ 1,412.01 to R$ 2,666.689%R$ 21.18
3rdR$ 2,666.69 to R$ 4,000.0312%R$ 101.18
4thR$ 4,000.04 to R$ 7,786.0214%R$ 181.18

The maximum contribution ceiling is R$ 7,786.02, resulting in a maximum deduction of R$ 908.85 per month.

Changes from 2023

Values were adjusted by 3.69%, following the minimum wage adjustment. Rates remained unchanged, maintaining the progressive system.

How to calculate INSS from salary

Progressive calculation

Unlike the previous system, the current calculation is progressive, similar to Income Tax. You pay lower rates on initial brackets and higher rates only on excess amounts.

The simplified formula is: INSS = (Salary × Rate) - Amount to Deduct

Detailed practical example

Example: Salary of R$ 5,000.00

  • Bracket 4 (R$ 4,000.04 to R$ 7,786.02) = 14%
  • Calculation: R$ 5,000 × 14% = R$ 700.00
  • Minus amount to deduct: R$ 700.00 - R$ 181.18 = R$ 518.82
  • Net salary after INSS: R$ 5,000.00 - R$ 518.82 = R$ 4,481.18

For lower salaries, the calculation follows the same logic:

Example: Salary of R$ 2,000.00

  • Bracket 2 (R$ 1,412.01 to R$ 2,666.68) = 9%
  • Calculation: R$ 2,000 × 9% = R$ 180.00
  • Minus amount to deduct: R$ 180.00 - R$ 21.18 = R$ 158.82

Contribution ceiling

Salaries above R$ 7,786.02 always contribute R$ 908.85, the maximum amount established by the table. This means someone earning R$ 10,000 or R$ 20,000 pays the same INSS amount.

INSS for different categories

CLT employee

For CLT employees, the deduction is automatic on the payroll. The employer also contributes with an employer rate ranging from 20% to 28.8%, depending on the activity’s risk level.

The contribution applies to:

  • Base salary
  • Overtime (with premium)
  • Commissions and bonuses
  • 13th salary
  • Vacation pay (including constitutional 1/3)

Self-employed and MEI

Individual contributors (self-employed) pay on the declared amount, respecting the minimum limit of one minimum wage (R$ 1,412.00) and maximum of the social security ceiling.

MEI (Individual Microentrepreneur) pays a fixed amount:

  • R$ 70.60 per month (5% of minimum wage)
  • R$ 76.60 if service provider (additional ISS)
  • R$ 71.60 if commerce/industry (additional ICMS)

Optional contributor

Students, housewives, and unemployed individuals can contribute voluntarily with 11% on an amount between the minimum wage and the social security ceiling.

There’s also the option to contribute 5% on the minimum wage, but with limited benefits (no right to retirement by contribution time).

Automatic INSS calculator

Manual INSS calculation can generate errors, especially with the current progressive system. Our INSS calculator automates the entire process:

  • Enter gross salary
  • Get exact deduction
  • See net salary
  • Compare different scenarios

The tool already considers the updated 2024 table and automatically applies the progressive formula, eliminating calculation error possibilities.

For more complete financial planning, you can combine the result with Income Tax calculations and other mandatory deductions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the INSS rate in 2024?

Rates vary from 7.5% to 14% according to salary bracket. Salaries up to R$ 1,412.00 pay 7.5%, while amounts above R$ 4,000.04 contribute 14%. The calculation is progressive, applying different rates to each bracket.

How to calculate INSS for a R$ 3,000 salary?

For R$ 3,000: apply 12% (bracket 3) = R$ 360.00, then subtract R$ 101.18 (amount to deduct) = R$ 258.82 INSS deduction. The net salary becomes R$ 2,741.18.

Does the 13th salary have INSS deduction?

Yes, the 13th salary has normal INSS deduction, calculated the same way as monthly salary. If you receive R$ 4,000 as 13th salary, the deduction will be the same as a regular R$ 4,000 salary.

Does MEI pay INSS like CLT?

No. MEI pays a fixed amount of R$ 70.60 monthly (5% of minimum wage), regardless of revenue. CLT pays 7.5% to 14% on gross salary, potentially reaching R$ 908.85 monthly.

What’s the maximum INSS deduction amount in 2024?

The maximum deduction is R$ 908.85 per month, applied to salaries of R$ 7,786.02 or higher. This is the social security contribution ceiling for 2024.

Do retirees who work pay INSS?

Yes, retirees who return to work pay INSS normally, but have no right to a new retirement through RGPS. The contribution is mandatory to maintain other benefits like disability aid.

Does INSS apply to overtime?
