Savings accounts continue to be one of the most popular investments in Brazil, but many people still have questions about how much they actually yield in 2025. With the new yield rules and economic changes, it’s essential to understand how to calculate your gains.

The good news is that you can simulate different scenarios and discover exactly how much your money will earn. Let’s explain everything in a practical way.

How savings accounts work

Current yield rule

Savings accounts follow a specific rule that depends on the Selic rate. When Selic is above 8.5% per year, savings accounts yield 0.5% per month + TR (Reference Rate).

If Selic is at 8.5% or less, the yield is 70% of Selic + TR. This change happened in 2012 and remains valid in 2025.

Selic Target and TR

With Selic at 10.75% per year (December 2024), savings accounts are under the first rule: 0.5% per month + TR.

TR has remained close to zero in recent years, so in practice savings accounts yield approximately 0.5% per month or 6.17% per year.

Example: R$ 10,000 in savings earns about R$ 617 in one year, reaching R$ 10,617.

Yield calculation

Official formula

To calculate savings account yield, use this formula:

Final Amount = Initial Amount × (1 + monthly rate)^number of months

Where the current monthly rate is 0.005 (0.5%).

Savings anniversary

Yield is only credited on the anniversary day of the deposit. If you deposit on the 15th, the money will only earn interest on the 15th of the following month.

This means withdrawing before the anniversary makes you lose all yield for that period.

Warning: Depositing on the 29th, 30th, or 31st makes the anniversary always fall on the last business day of the month.

Impact of monthly contributions

Making monthly contributions significantly accelerates growth. With R$ 10,000 initial + R$ 500 monthly:

  • 12 months: R$ 16,617 (vs R$ 10,617 without contributions)
  • 24 months: R$ 23,772
  • 60 months: R$ 53,469

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does R$ 1,000 in savings yield per month?

R$ 1,000 in savings yields approximately R$ 5.00 per month (0.5% per month). In one year, the amount would reach R$ 1,062, considering the current rate.

What is the savings yield rule in 2025?

With Selic above 8.5%, savings yield 0.5% per month + TR. Since TR is close to zero, the effective yield is about 0.5% per month or 6.17% per year.

Can I withdraw from savings anytime without losing yield?

You can withdraw anytime, but lose the month’s yield if you withdraw before the anniversary. Yield is only credited monthly on the initial deposit date.

Are savings better than CDB?

No in most cases. CDBs yielding above 85% of CDI outperform savings even after income tax. Savings only make sense for emergency funds due to total liquidity.

How to calculate savings yield with monthly contributions?

Use the annuity formula: each contribution earns from its monthly anniversary. Our savings calculator does this calculation automatically for different scenarios.

Is there a minimum amount to invest in savings?

There’s no minimum amount at most banks. You can start with any amount, making savings accessible to all investor profiles.

Do savings protect against inflation?

Not always. When inflation is high, savings may yield less than IPCA, making you lose purchasing power even while earning nominal interest.
